Orchard grass is soft and green, with a fruity smell which the animals enjoy. It averages 30% fiber and 10% protein. More drought tolerant then Timothy, it is well suited for New Mexico's arid environment. Also known as cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata), it is a widely distributed perennial grass native to Eurasia and North Africa, extensively naturalized in the United States. As a pasture grass, it is highly preferred by livestock, and is one of the few grasses which grows well under trees. High in fiber and low in protein, it is an excellent choice for fast-growing foals. At VB Farms, we have overcome problems of epiphysitis in a young paint colt through exclusive feeding of Orchard Grass. |
